Become a Coalition member. Help launch North Carolina's newest specialty license plate campaign.
When you reserve your Great Trails State specialty license plate, you'll automatically receive a one-year Individual Membership in the Great Trails State Coalition.
Your membership begins immediately and supports statewide efforts to expand trails, advocate for funding, connect communities, and grow North Carolina as the Great Trails State.
Once the required 500 plate applications are reached, your application and payment will be submitted to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles to establish the new specialty plate.

How to Reserve Your Plate
Getting your plate is easy. Complete the steps below to become a Founding Supporter of North Carolina's Great Trails State specialty license plate.

Complete the Application
Download the DMV specialty plate application (form MVR-27PPA) and fill in your name, contact information, vehicle registration details, and insurance information. It takes about 5 minutes.

Choose Your Plate and Pay
Select the Standard package ($30) or the Personalized package ($60) and submit your payment securely online through the Great Trails State Coalition c/o Catawba Lands Conservancy. Credit and debit cards accepted.
Your payment activates your one-year Individual Membership immediately.

What Happens Next?
The Coalition is working to collect the 500 completed applications required by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles by January 2027. Once we reach our goal:
- All applications will be submitted to the North Carolina DMV.
- The DMV will begin authorizing and producing the new specialty plate.
- We'll keep you informed every step of the way, including when your plate becomes available.

What happens if the Coalition doesn't reach 500 applications?
Your one-year Great Trails State Coalition membership begins immediately and provides valuable member benefits regardless of the outcome of the plate campaign. The Coalition will continue working toward the required number of applications and will communicate next steps if the threshold is not reached during the current campaign.

When does my membership begin?
Your membership begins as soon as your application and payment are received.
When do I get my plate?
If the General Assembly approves the specialty plate during the 2027 Long Session, we will submit the final design to NCDMV, and plates will begin to be issued within 180 days of the DMV receiving the design.
Important Information
- Your payment serves as your annual Individual Membership contribution to the Great Trails State Coalition and supports the Coalition's mission to advance trails across North Carolina.
- Your completed application will be retained by the Coalition and submitted to the North Carolina DMV once the required minimum of 500 applications has been collected.
- Because your membership benefits begin immediately upon purchase, membership contributions are non-refundable.
- If the Coalition does not reach the minimum number of applications required by the DMV during the current campaign, your membership will remain active through its one-year term.
- The Coalition will keep applicants informed throughout the campaign.
